Mortal Shell 2 Shells: All Classes & Abilities
Shells are Mortal Shell II’s class system: fallen warriors whose bodies the Harbinger can possess. This guide explains their roles, abilities, unlocks, free respecs, and the roster-count discrepancy in current sources.
How Shells work
A Shell is the remains of a warrior. Once discovered, it becomes permanently available to the Harbinger and provides distinct stats, resistances, active abilities, and passive upgrades. When a Shell is defeated, you are ejected and get a chance to recover it rather than dying immediately.
Each Shell has a skill tree, and points can be reallocated without cost. That makes Shells closer to interchangeable combat toolkits than permanent builds. Respec before difficult encounters.
Known Shell roles
The supplied community-wiki and guide research names Harros the Vassal, Tiel the Acolyte, Eredrim the Venerable, Proxima the Broodseeker, Genessa the Wayward, Gragu the Insatiable, Lazlo the Justiciar, Sariel the Endless, and Smert the Apostate. Use only verified details. Use only verified details.
Official open-beta copy says Tiel is “one of Mortal Shell II’s eight playable Shells,” and other official-facing material also refers to eight. Because the collected wiki roster lists nine names, this page avoids declaring a final roster count until the in-game list is fully reconciled. Respec before difficult encounters.
- Harros: stone stun and melee punishment
- Tiel: invisibility and critical strikes
- Eredrim: durability, Shoulder Bash, and executions
- Proxima: hook, lightning follow-up, and damage mitigation
- Lazlo: fire-resistant late-game durability
- Sariel: recurring boss encounter tied to his unlock
Where the guide evidence points
Tiel is reported near an open grave southeast of Widow’s Overlook and south of Mushroom Village. Proxima is reported on a coffin on the first level of Shattered Beacon, northeast of Blackridge Pass. Eredrim, Lazlo, Sariel, and other later Shells are tied to dungeons, boss encounters, or NPC quests.
Sariel’s route is the clearest example of a Shell tied to a repeated boss fight: research says you must break surrounding stones before his resurrection loop stops. Gragu is associated with the Heart of Vatra key item, and Lazlo is tied to a later Mammon-region storyline. Check your signed-in storefront.
Choosing and building a Shell
Choose by problem, not only by tier. Stealth and critical damage make Tiel excellent against bosses you have not learned. Proxima suits players who want to remain in melee. Eredrim excels when you understand an enemy and can force break windows.
Use free respec before a boss. If an area uses frost or fire, move points into the matching resistance or defensive passive. If you are attempting a posture-break strategy, invest in abilities that amplify Shoulder Bash and Riposte damage.
Roster-count warning
Search results currently mix beta-era information, review copies, and post-embargo wikis. Some sources name nine warriors while official copy repeatedly says eight playable Shells. One name may be an NPC, boss, cut/renamed Shell, or wiki error.
For gameplay planning, treat the role descriptions above as useful and the exact total as in flux. For buying decisions, do not rely on the Shell count alone; the campaign and combat systems are present regardless. Respec before difficult encounters.
Full Shell unlock directory
The supplied Rock Paper Shotgun guide identifies eight unlockable Shells beyond the Prologue helper Harros: Tiel, Proxima, Eredrim, Gragu, Smert, Sester Genessa, Lazlo, and Sariel. Tiel is east of Mushroom Village at a torch-lit grave. Proxima lies on a table inside the Shattered Beacon north of Widow’s Overlook and near Blackridge Cliffs.
Eredrim is found after navigating the Citadel of Penance and defeating the Warden. Gragu is a living NPC in the One-Legged Wolf Tavern; bring him the Heart of Vatra from the Temple of Vatra. Smert lies at Prophet’s Rest near the Outskirts of Nochte, where three cultist groups must be interrupted.
Sester Genessa begins as the training NPC in Marrow Keep and asks for a censer found through the Revenant Graves; defeating Sester Secondus returns it to her. Lazlo is in the Royal Crypt of Mammon beyond Vellen, High Lord of Mammon. Sariel is fought near Silent Steps and again in the Chamber of Becoming, where breaking four stones ends his resurrection loop.
Shell roles and practical use
Tiel is the safest early explorer because perfect dodges and shadow strikes give him recovery time. Proxima is durable and aggressive, with Grafted Armor and a hook that pulls enemies or closes distance before a Lightning follow-up. Eredrim is a posture-breaking boss specialist once Shoulder Bash and its surrounding ability are upgraded.
Gragu and Sester Genessa are less conventional. Gragu is tied to a tavern NPC quest and the Heart of Vatra, while Genessa switches the Harbinger into a separate character after her censer quest. Lazlo is a later, durable Shell tied to a Mammon storyline, and Sariel is the reward for a repeated boss encounter that also drops the Clockwork Scythe.
Glimpses and unlock strategy
Rock Paper Shotgun advises against spending limited Glimpses merely to reveal approximate Shell locations. The guide instead gives exact routes, so Glimpses can be saved for progression or Shell memories. Use a location reveal only when you are genuinely stuck or near the end of a session.
Unlocking a Shell is not the same as understanding it. Spend a short practice fight learning its active ability, recovery, and elemental resistance. Because Shell points can be freely refunded, test a specialized allocation before a boss rather than after several failed runs.
- Tiel: safe stealth and critical damage
- Proxima: durability, hook, and pressure
- Eredrim: Break damage and executions
- Gragu: tavern NPC quest
- Genessa: censer quest and separate form
- Lazlo: late Mammon storyline
- Sariel: repeated boss encounter
Roster count and To be confirmed details
Official copy repeatedly says eight playable Shells, and the dedicated location guide lists the eight named above. A separate Fextralife roster also included Harros and several additional names during launch-week edits. The discrepancy is why this page does not expand the roster without a newer official list.
Exact ability values, damage scaling, and post-patch balance are To be confirmed. Use role descriptions for planning, but test actual behavior in your build. If a future official page confirms a ninth playable Shell, this directory should be updated with its unlock route.
Evidence and update policy
This page separates launch facts from player-facing advice so all Shell roles and unlock routes can be checked quickly. Official listings are used for prices, dates, platform features, and edition contents. Guide, review, wiki, and video research is used for routes, performance impressions, and gameplay explanation.
| Evidence type | What it supports here | How this page uses it |
|---|---|---|
| Official listing | Price, date, platform, mode, and edition contents | Treated as the buying reference |
| Official video | Premise, mechanics, and confirmed presentation | Used to explain systems without turning lore into fact |
| Guide or wiki research | Locations, unlocks, names, and routes | Cross-checked against other supplied pages |
| Review or user evidence | Performance, pacing, technical complaints, and sentiment | Reported as evidence rather than treated as universal |
| Mod or community listing | Fast-changing third-party details | Dated and marked To be confirmed |
The strongest conclusion for all Shell roles and unlock routes comes from repeated agreement between official copy and independent launch-week research. When only one source provides a detail, the page keeps that limitation visible. Anything dependent on a patch, region, retailer, or unannounced platform policy is marked To be confirmed.
Source notes
Shell definitions come from collected Fextralife wiki pages, GameRant and GamesRadar guides, and Rock Paper Shotgun location research. Official eight-Shell wording comes from open-beta store copy. Exact stat values and post-launch balance remain To be confirmed.
