Mortal Shell 2 character roster

Mortal Shell II separates its cast into four useful groups: the Harbinger you control outside a body, fallen warriors used as playable Shells, non-player characters who provide services or side quests, and guardians who block story or equipment progress. A person can cross categories. Sester Genessa begins as a trainer and later becomes a playable Shell, while Sariel is both a boss encounter and a body you can claim.

The roster is intentionally organized by function rather than claiming every villager, disciple, or minor dialogue variant is a separate major character.

The Harbinger and playable Shells

The Harbinger is an inhuman survivor connected to the Undermether and the stolen Ova. Outside a Shell, the Harbinger is vulnerable. Possession supplies a warrior’s abilities, passive effects, appearance, and memories, so a Shell is both a class and a character with an unfinished history.

Current launch-build sources list eight permanent bodies: Tiel the Acolyte, Proxima the Broodseeker, Eredrim the Venerable, Gragu the Insatiable, Smert the Apostate, Sester Genessa the Wayward, Lazlo the Justiciar, and Sariel the Endless. Harros the Vassal appears during the Prologue but is not listed as part of the permanent post-Prologue selection. Because early references use conflicting roster totals, treat this as a versioned count and recheck it after patches. See the classes and Shell abilities guide for active skills, passives, roles, and unlock routes.

Memories unlocked through Bond progression reveal what happened to each fallen warrior. Following one Shell’s memories at a time is the clearest spoiler-light way to understand the cast without turning every cryptic line into a theory.

Quest NPCs and service characters

Marrow Keep concentrates several important services. Zhirelle the Shellkeeper handles Bond progression and approximate Shell clues. Franz is associated with weapon and sidearm improvement, while Merrick buys harvested specimens and sells useful supplies. Milos introduces a core progression service, and Ruk repeatedly directs the Harbinger through the wider journey.

Quest NPCs change after dialogue is exhausted or the world is refreshed at a Beacon. Hilga and Grom form a staged Mushroom Village story that later crosses into Gorf’s quest. Grisha Pup, Egon, and Vlas also have optional chains with their own locations and outcomes. When an NPC stops offering new dialogue, rest at a Beacon, reload the area, and check the same location before assuming the chain has ended.

Grom, Gorf, and Gragu explained

These similar names refer to three different characters:

  • Grom is the bony man found in Hilga’s cooking pot east of the Mushroom Village Beacon. His changing condition marks the early stages of Hilga’s story.
  • Gorf is the large amphibian near Widow’s Overlook. His quest supplies the Poisoned Dagger needed to move Hilga’s chain into its final act.
  • Gragu the Insatiable is a playable Shell first met at the One-Legged Wolf Tavern. His unlock involves the Heart of Vatra and is unrelated to Hilga’s experiments.

If the search term that brought you here was “Grom Mortal Shell 2,” use the complete Hilga and Grom quest walkthrough. It covers every Beacon refresh, the Poisoned Dagger handoff, Common Moonshine, and the Marsh Pearl reward.

Female characters in Mortal Shell 2

Clearly identified women in the launch material include playable Shells Proxima and Sester Genessa, Shellkeeper Zhirelle, and quest NPC Hilga. Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods, is another prominent named figure encountered as a guardian. This is not presented as an exhaustive list of every minor NPC because some armor silhouettes, titles, and translated names do not establish identity reliably.

Proxima is the most direct answer when a player is looking for an early female playable character: her hook-based Biosampler and Grafted Armor create a durable close-range style. Genessa arrives later through a dedicated censer quest and plays as a summoner whose doubles reproduce attacks.

Bosses and guardians

The Tar Golem closes the tutorial lesson around Harros. Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods, anchors the early Fainweald route. The Warden is tied to Eredrim’s Citadel of Penance unlock, and Vellen stands on the path toward Lazlo. Sariel is the most obvious character crossover: his repeated encounters and resurrection puzzle culminate in both his Shell and the Clockwork Scythe.

Other named enemies and guardians expand the world’s factions, but they should not be mixed into the playable roster simply because they carry a title. A reliable directory keeps encounter roles separate from permanent Shell availability.

Story reading order

Start with the Harbinger’s purpose, then follow the memories of the Shell you actually use. Revisit Marrow Keep services after major unlocks, and return to quest NPCs after cleansing a Beacon or changing regions. That order connects character development to actions the player can verify instead of requiring a complete lore explanation upfront.

Mortal Shell II is designed as a standalone sequel, so the first game is not required reading. Returning characters and motifs add context, but current objectives, NPC services, and Shell memories provide the information needed for this journey.

Source notes

Names and roles were reconciled across official premise material, launch-build menus, Shell location research, and NPC walkthroughs. The directory distinguishes permanent Shells, tutorial-only Harros, NPC services, quests, and boss encounters so similarly named characters are not treated as duplicates or alternate spellings.
