Quick quest summary
Hilga is a frog-obsessed quest NPC living with Grom in a fenced Mushroom Village enclosure. Most of the early story advances by exhausting every available interaction, resting at a Beacon, and returning to the same place. The final stages connect to Gorf near Widow’s Overlook.
The complete chain is:
- Meet Hilga, Grom, and Harwald near Mushroom Village.
- Rest at a Beacon and revisit the enclosure until Grom is caged and Harwald has a grave.
- Progress Gorf’s separate quest until you receive the Poisoned Dagger.
- Give the Poisoned Dagger to Hilga.
- Follow Hilga to Gorf and give one Common Moonshine when requested.
- Rest and return to collect one Marsh Pearl from Gorf.
- Refresh the area again to see Hilga’s transformation and the family ending.
The cauldron interactions and the moment when you sit in the empty pot add dialogue and flavor, but the two items that gate the finale are the Poisoned Dagger and Common Moonshine.
Where to find Hilga and Grom
Start at the Mushroom Village Beacon and travel east until the path reaches a crossroads. Take the left route uphill toward the posts with hanging bodies. Turn left again, cross the short wooden bridge, and enter the walled settlement clearing. Hilga stands near a cauldron, while Grom begins the quest sitting in a large cooking pot.
Inspect everyone before leaving. Speak to Hilga, talk to Grom until his lines repeat, interact with the cauldron, and examine Hilga’s amphibian companion Harwald. The first visit establishes all three characters and reduces the chance that a later refresh appears not to work.
Complete Hilga and Grom quest walkthrough
On the first visit, Hilga is busy with her mixture and Grom wants to be left alone. You may drink from the cauldron; doing so does not lock you out of the quest. Rest at any Beacon to refresh the area, then return to the enclosure.
The next visits tell a continuous story. Hilga may be absent while Grom remains in the pot. After another refresh she returns and stirs the broth while Grom’s speech deteriorates. Continue exhausting dialogue and using a Beacon between visits. Grom gradually acts more like a frog, and the cauldron later becomes empty. At that stage, interact with the pot to sit in it if the prompt appears.
Keep refreshing. Harwald eventually dies, Hilga becomes distraught, and Grom is later confined in a cage. Examine Harwald’s remains and then the grave beside the enclosure. When Hilga only sighs or repeats the same line and Grom is caged, the Mushroom Village portion has reached its temporary stopping point.
Do not keep reloading indefinitely. The next trigger comes from Gorf’s quest rather than another local conversation. Leave Mushroom Village and continue Gorf’s chain until the Poisoned Dagger enters your inventory.
Give the dagger to Hilga. She decides to help Gorf and leaves the enclosure after the next refresh. Return once more to find her note, then travel back to Gorf near Widow’s Overlook. Hilga will be beside him and will ask you to contribute one Common Moonshine to his recovery.
After handing over the Moonshine, rest at a nearby Beacon and return. Speak to Gorf to receive the Marsh Pearl. Refresh again to see Hilga’s new form, exhaust both characters’ dialogue, and make one final visit for the family scene.
How to advance the quest with Beacon rests
Beacon rests are the quest’s scene-change mechanism. A visit counts only after you have exhausted the current dialogue and interactions. Use this compact checklist before every refresh:
| Stage | What you should see | Action before resting |
|---|---|---|
| First meeting | Hilga cooking and Grom in the pot | Talk to both and inspect Harwald |
| Hilga away | Grom alone with an empty or changed cauldron | Exhaust Grom’s dialogue |
| Broth scene | Hilga stirring and Grom muttering | Talk to both |
| Transformation | Grom behaves like a frog | Inspect Grom and Harwald |
| Empty pot | The cauldron can be entered | Sit in it if prompted |
| Harwald’s fate | Harwald’s remains appear | Examine the remains and speak to Hilga |
| Caged Grom | Grom is confined and Harwald has a grave | Examine the grave, then begin the Gorf item gate |
If the visual state does not change, confirm that every speech option and nearby inspect prompt was used. Rest at a Beacon rather than merely walking far away and back.
Poisoned Dagger and Common Moonshine
The Poisoned Dagger belongs to Gorf’s questline. Continue visiting Gorf near Widow’s Overlook, exhaust his changing dialogue, and refresh the area as that story requests. When Gorf’s condition worsens, the dagger becomes the item that links his problem to Hilga’s knowledge. Return to Mushroom Village and give it directly to Hilga.
One more Beacon refresh moves Hilga away from her original clearing. Her note points you back toward Gorf. When you find them together, Hilga asks for one Common Moonshine. This is a normal consumable found while exploring dungeons and brigand camps, so keep at least one in your inventory once the dagger handoff is complete.
The Moonshine handoff is required for Gorf’s recovery. Drinking or selling your last one can delay the ending, but it does not fail the quest; obtain another and return.
Rewards and ending
After the Common Moonshine step, refresh at a Beacon and talk to the recovered Gorf. He awards one Marsh Pearl for Hilga’s branch of the chain. Additional Marsh Pearls may come from the wider Gorf quest, so do not confuse the total from both stories with this single handoff reward.
Later refreshes reveal Hilga transformed into a giant amphibian beside Gorf, followed by their family scene. Grom remains part of the Mushroom Village aftermath. For an optional final interaction, play the Troubadour’s Lute near Hilga and Gorf after the quest; it changes their reaction but is not required for completion or the Marsh Pearl.
Quest troubleshooting
Hilga or Grom will not change. Exhaust both characters’ lines, inspect Harwald or his grave, use the cauldron prompt, then rest at a Beacon.
Hilga only sighs. This usually means the local scenes are complete. Advance Gorf’s quest and bring back the Poisoned Dagger.
Hilga disappeared. After receiving the dagger, check for her note, then return to Gorf near Widow’s Overlook.
Gorf does not reward the Marsh Pearl. Confirm that one Common Moonshine was handed over after Hilga joined him, then refresh at a Beacon before speaking to Gorf again.
The ending has not appeared. Exhaust Hilga and Gorf’s post-recovery dialogue and perform another Beacon refresh. The transformation and family scenes occur after the reward stage rather than at the same time.
Source notes
This walkthrough was independently written from a cross-check of launch-week Hilga coverage by Rock Paper Shotgun, Game8, and Sportskeeda, plus two full NPC and side-quest video walkthroughs. Shared facts were used for the route, refresh order, item gates, reward, and ending. Dialogue was summarized rather than reproduced, and optional flavor interactions are separated from required progression steps.
